Technics was founded in Japan in the 1960s and initially entered the market producing high-end speakers. Although Technics produced high cassette decks, amplifiers and hi-fi units, it was turntables and their relation to DJs and the synergy formed by the growth of the 12” single which made Technics a brand leader.

In 1969 Technics introduced the SP-10 model which was unique in that it paved the way for the future being the first ever direct drive turntable. Technics brought out their first turntable adopted by the DJs in 1971 used by many of the early block party DJs in the Bronx and the Manhattan disco’s.

As the years continued Technics brought out its 2 key models which would be adopted by the DJ world, first the SL-1200 in silver and then the SL-1210 which was essentially the same turntable but in black. These turntables were one of the first vari-speed decks on the market and became the biggest selling in the world. In the mid 80’s Technics paired with DMC (Disco Mix Club) to create the world’s first DJ championships which initially concentrated on mixing but in the 90’s was all about scratching and beat juggling.

Technics modified the 1210 over the years with the MK2 changing to the MK3 and eventually the MK5G which was equipped with a quartz lock. With the rise of CDJs in the mid to late noughties Technics lost the DJ market to companies such as Pioneer and the 1210 was retired from production, however it is rumoured that Technics are about to re-issue the turntable in 2016.
